Philanthropy

Kappa Delta has a heart for philanthropy and strives to better our communities, both locally and nationally, through acts of service. Nationally, Kappa Delta supports Prevent Child Abuse America and Girl Scouts of America. Locally, the Zeta Chapter of Kappa Delta at The University of Alabama supports Crossing Points and Child Abuse Prevention Services - Tuscaloosa. Our chapter holds numerous events throughout the year to support our national and local philanthropies, in addition to providing aid and support for other charitable organizations and causes. Our chapter hosts an annual Shamrock Run 5K every Spring to raise money for Child Abuse Prevention Services, Prevent Child Abuse America, and The Children's Trust Fund. In 2024, we raised $105,469.92 for these amazing organizations!

Girl Scouts

Through Kappa Delta’s national partnership with Girl Scouts, beginning in 1998, Kappa Delta has been able to make a difference in more than 14,000 girls lives’ every year across the country. Additionally, the Kappa Delta Foundation contributes annually to the Girl Scout Gold Award program, providing scholarships to Gold Award Girl Scouts, the highest recognition in Girl Scouting.

The Zeta Chapter of Kappa Delta works closely with Girl Scouts throughout the year to build courage, confidence, and character. It is one of our pride and joys to host local Girl Scouts troops throughout the year, as we build confidence, nurture valuable relationships with each other and our communities, and - of course - sell (and eat) the iconic and beloved Girl Scout cookies. We pride ourselves in providing mentorship, exploration, and education to our local troops in ways that allow the girls to earn badges and feel pride in their accomplishments. Throughout our history of working with the Girl Scouts, we have had the pleasure of helping the girls to earn badges in a variety of fields, while also having fun in a safe and inclusive environment. We love you, Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama!

Prevent Child Abuse America, Child Abuse

Prevention Services, and The Children’s

Trust Fund

Since 1981, Kappa Delta has been a proud supporter of Prevent Child Abuse America, an organization founded by the late Donna Stone, one of our own Kappa Delta sisters, whose mission is to prevent the abuse and neglect of children across the nation. Prevent Child Abuse America is the nation’s oldest and largest organization committed to preventing child abuse and neglect before it happens. The organization promotes programs and resources informed by science that enable kids, families, and entire communities to thrive - today, tomorrow, and for generations to come. To date, Kappa Delta has donated more than $33 million dollars to prevent child abuse across the nation.

The Zeta Chapter of Kappa Delta also supports Child Abuse Prevention Services - Tuscaloosa, and the Alabama Department of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Children’s Trust Fund of Alabama. Child Abuse Prevention Services - Tuscaloosa is a local organization that provides prevention and treatment education in an effort to break the cycle of child maltreatment, so that children can experience a happy, healthy, and safe childhood, with the goal of providing education and awareness programs for the prevention of child abuse and neglect. The Children’s Trust Fund secures resources to fund evidence-based community programs committed to the prevention of child maltreatment and advocates for children and the strengthening of families.

The Zeta Chapter of Kappa Delta is honored to have the opportunity to work with and raise awareness and funds for these important organizations every Spring, during our Parent’s Weekend Shamrock Run 5K. This year we had over 1050 participants in the Shamrock Run 5K and over the past five years have been able to raise over $425,500 for these organizations. Words cannot express how grateful we are and how rewarding it is to be a part of an organization that makes such an impact in the Tuscaloosa Community.

Crossing Points

The Zeta Chapter of Kappa Delta loves getting to work with CrossingPoints. A collaboration between The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa City Schools, and Tuscaloosa County Schools, the CrossingPoints Program serves students with significant disabilities ages 18-21 years during the academic year. CrossingPoints strives to create authentic transition connections between individuals with disabilities, their families, and the community that promote partnerships of caring to ensure the achievement of enviable lifestyles supported by ongoing self-determination and empowered decision making.

The Zeta Chapter of Kappa Delta Our hosts monthly events with the CrossingPoints students, ranging from dinners at the Kappa Delta house, game nights, seasonal parties, and - the highlight of the year - the annual Halloween Party! Every Spring Kappa Delta and the Beta Delta Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega join together to host the annual CrossingPoints Prom. This is a magical night, near and dear to the hearts of all involved, where we gather together for a quintessential, classic prom, filled with a night of  music, dancing, food, and fellowship with all of the CrossingPoints students.

CrossingPoints launched on the University of Alabama’s campus in 2003, and in 2012, the Betty Shirley Annual Golf Tournament was created as the primary fundraising event for the program. Betty Shirley was a community service and mental health advocate, dedicated to her lifelong work that honored her beloved grandson, the late Walt Gary. Shirley is a University of Alabama graduate and Zeta Chapter of Kappa Delta alumni. Kappa Delta is proud to be a sponsor of and participate in the“Betty Shirley Memorial Golf Tournament” to honor Betty Shirley’s legacy and to commemorate the work Betty Shirley has done throughout these programs and the community.
